JAMES BEARD AWARD WINNER! (05/07/2007)
(Pittsburgh, PA) May 7, 2007 - Primanti Bros. Restaurants was named an "American Classic" by the James Beard Foundation on Monday, May 7, 2007. Each year the James Beard Foundation presents this award to small, regional restaurants - casual watering holes, shacks, lunch corners, or eateries that have offered good, down-home food and unmatched hospitality for generations. These restaurants offer a very distinct menu and atmosphere and are a slice of American culinary history. The following was written for Primanti Bros. by the James Beard Foundation Committee. "The first Primanti Brothers Restaurant was opened in 1933 in Pittsburgh's warehouse district. The small Italian eatery now has several outposts in Pittsburgh and Florida, all of which are famous for the super-stuffed Primanti Sandwich, a gargantuan hand-held meal rumored to have been created for nighttime workers on the loading docks who needed to eat on the job."
The Primanti Brothers sandwich is a Pittsburgh institution, it is a sandwich that would make the Dagwood drool; stuffed with sizzling meat, melted cheese, hand-cut fried potatoes, tomatoes and coleslaw between two slices of crusty Italian bread. Primanti Brothers Restaurants have grown to include 12 locations in Pittsburgh and 2 in Ft. Lauderdale. The newer Primanti's located in Pittsburgh suburbs build on the original Primanti's menu adding pizza, salads, pasta dishes and baked sandwiches. "Primanti Brothers Restaurant is honored to be awarded this designation from such an icon in the culinary industry as James Beard" said Primanti's owner Jim Patrinos.
The 2007 James Beard Foundation Awards, the premier honors for food and beverage professionals in America, took place on May 6 and 7 in New York City. More than 60 awards were presented during the two-day celebration, honoring restaurantuers, chefs, book authors, media professionals, restaurant designers and graphic artists.
